Confusion surrounding status of Joshua Buatsi v Dan Azeez

CONTRARY to reports Joshua Buatsi and Dan Azeez are not scheduled to fight one another on August 19.

Both men are part of the Boxxer promotional outfit and in the current WBA light-heavyweight rankings they are separated by one position. As of now, Buatsi is their number one contender with Azeez at two.

Rumours of a fight between have grown exponentially ever since Buatsi joined Ben Shalomโ€™s team in March.

Yesterday articles were posted online that the fight would be taking place on August 19 in Brighton. The articles in question led with the following opening paragraph: โ€˜The World Boxing Association (WBA) has made it official that the WBA No. 1 world ranked light heavyweight Joshua Buatsi will face the WBA No. 2 world ranked light heavyweight Dan โ€œSuperโ€ Azeez in the โ€œWBA Light Heavyweight Final Eliminator’.

The story itself reads like a press release but one look at the World Boxing Association website and their social media channels shows nothing about Buatsi v Azeez. Where the information originated from is unknown.

Boxing News understands that there is interest from both camps about making the fight happen, but nothing is confirmed as we understand it.ย BNย contacted Boxxer for a comment but there was no update to give on Buatsi or Azeez.

The former Olympic bronze medallist made his Boxxer debut on May 6 in Birmingham with a routine 10-round points win over Pawel Stepien. Azeez, the current European light-heavyweight champion, was in attendance on the night working for Sky Sports as a guest pundit.

Boxing News will have an update as and when we have one.
