Floyd Mayweather has yet again switched up his ring return plans, but confirmed his intention to face Ryan Garcia in 2027.
The 49-year-old boxing icon retired in 2017 after a win against Conor McGregor and has fought on the exhibition circuit ever since.
Earlier this year, it was announced that he had signed to reignite his rivalry with Manny Pacquiao, but, despite Netflix officially announcing the fight, it was later postponed indefinitely due to legal issues on Mayweather’s side.
More recently, welterweight world champion Ryan Garcia revealed that he had been in talks to bring Mayweather out of retirement, and has since doubled down on the claims.
In the latest twist, Mayweather has now announced a fight against Matt Floyd in Bangkok on December 19. ‘Battle of the Floyds’ is expected to be an exhibition. On the Instagram post announcing the fight, Mayweather said:
“This is a lil tune-up before me and Ryan Garcia lock up.”
Matt Floyd, 37, has had seventeen low-level pro fights since his debut in 2021, winning fifteen and losing two.
He recently made headlines on the crossover circuit, securing a controversial disqualification victory over Anthony Taylor at a Misfits Boxing event in June 2026. In September of 2025, he lost his Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship debut against James Degale.
Garcia has insisted that he is returning on February 6, and told Mayweather to take or leave the opportunity to challenge for his WBC title – a belt Mayweather has held twice during his career.
Despite the plan laid out by the veteran, many questions still remain, most prominently the fact that just last month he said his next two fights would be an exhibition with Mike Tyson and a professional rematch with Pacquiao – something he is reportedly contracted for. Mayweather has also announced, and not followed through with, an exhibtion against Greek kickboxer Mike Zambidis.
