UNIFIED super welterweight champion Sebastian Fundora has been left searching for a new opponent after his showdown with Errol Spence Jr was scuppered.
The pair were set to lock horns on March 29, with Spence, 28-1 (22 KOs), returning for the first time since his punishing defeat to Terence Crawford in 2023.
But now, with the former welterweight king seemingly extending his hiatus, WBC and WBO titlist Fundora, 21-1-1 (13 KOs), must collide with an alternative dance partner.
And so, ahead of an official announcement regarding his upcoming assignment, it is worth considering who the 27-year-old could face next.
Serhii Bohachuk
After the news of Fundora’s dilemma emerged towards the end of last week, monstrous puncher Serhii Bohachuk, 25-2 (24 KOs), swiftly took to social media, expressing his interest in taking on ‘The Towering Inferno.’
The 29-year-old comes off a dominant sixth-round stoppage victory over late notice opponent Ishmael Davis and, in his previous outing, was able to produce an equally measured performance against Vergil Ortiz Jr.
But despite flooring Ortiz twice in their enthralling contest last year, the Ukrainian was ultimately forced to suffer a highly contentious majority decision defeat.
Still, having proved his quality at world level in recent years, Bohachuk nonetheless represents a formidable challenge for Fundora.
Charles Conwell
Unbeaten super welterweight contender Charles Conwell, 21-0 (16 KOs), has been mentioned by ESPN boxing journalist Mike Coppinger as a possible opponent for Fundora.
While he is yet to beat any world level operators at 154 lbs, the 27-year-old’s lofty rankings with the WBC and WBO would suggest that he is poised to challenge for the two belts.
Not only that, but his destructive sixth-round stoppage victory over seasoned veteran Nathaniel Gallimore last year has put him in the shop window for a monumental opportunity.
Xander Zayas
Having established himself as one of the most talented prospects in boxing, Xander Zayas, 20-0 (12 KOs), now looks to resume his unrelenting progression as a fearsome contender.
The 22-year-old expressed his desire to take on Ortiz towards the end of last year, only for the prolific knockout artist to secure a showdown with Israil Madrimov instead.
But still, Zayas’ statement of intent shows that he is determined to enter the next stage of his promising career, as he looks to retain his number-one WBO ranking when he squares off against Slawa Spomer on February 14.
So while a potential clash with Fundora is unlikely to materialise next, the Puerto Rican has nonetheless positioned himself to face the rangy southpaw later this year.
