RICKY HATTON may no longer be with us, but his mission to support those struggling with mental health lives on through the newly launched Ricky Hatton Foundation.
As his family, friends and fans continue to come to terms with his passing, the Foundation has been created to build on his work and ensure that no one facing mental illness has to fight alone.
Hatton’s openness about his own mental health battles made him a source of strength for others. His work with CALM (Campaign Against Living Miserably) and Andy’s Man Club inspired countless people to speak out and seek help.
A statement on the Foundation’s website reads: “Ricky was open and honest about his own struggles with mental health. His courage in speaking about these challenges gave others the strength to share their own battles. In his memory, we are determined to channel our sadness into something powerful and positive: creating a lasting legacy for the People’s Champion.”
The Foundation’s mission is to raise awareness of mental health challenges, remove the stigma around speaking up, and provide education and support through community programmes, outreach and practical resources. It also aims to offer direct help through talking therapies – to be in the corner of those struggling, just as Hatton was for so many.
Hatton’s achievements in the ring will forever be part of British boxing history, and his passion for Manchester City will continue to echo around the Etihad on matchdays. The Foundation intends to use sport as a force to bring people together, spark conversations and promote wellbeing.
Further details on events, initiatives and how to get involved will be announced in the coming weeks. Supporters can register their interest on the Foundation’s website or donate via its JustGiving page, which has set a £100,000 target to help fund its work.
The Ricky Hatton Foundation can also be followed on Facebook, Instagram and X.
