THE fight no one was asking for, could still happen. In a left field pronouncement Oscar De La Hoya, a long since retired legend, declared that he had been training in secret and wanted one last fight against UFC star Conor McGregor of all people.

It’s not clear if De La Hoya is being entirely serious. He hasn’t boxed since a 2008 drubbing against Manny Pacquiao. But fighters often are the last to know when to stop. And McGregor isn’t a boxer, he’s a mixed martial artist who still managed to go 10 rounds with Floyd Mayweather in his professional boxing debut. De La Hoya reckons that even as his advanced age of 44 years old he could beat McGregor in a boxing match.

“I’m competitive. I still have it in me. I’ve been secretly training,” De La Hoya declared on Golden Boy Radio.

“I’m faster than ever. Stronger than ever,” he added in a fanciful outburst.

He claims he would do a more efficient job on the Irishman than Mayweather did. “I know I can take out Conor McGregor in two rounds. I’ll come back for that fight,” he said. “I’m calling him out. Two rounds. That’s all I need.”
