Nathaniel Collins drops Monty Ogilvie five times to become champion

ONE day short of a year since making his professional debut at the same venue, Nathaniel Collins was headlining for the first time and fighting for a title on the Kynoch Boxing Promotions Thunder show at the Lagoon Leisure Centre.

The vacant Celtic featherweight title was on the line between two undefeated boxers. Killin’s Monty Ogilvie was officially the home fighter but Collins had a large support from neighbouring Glasgow.

Collins got to work early, landing some great shots and showing good head movement. In the second stanza Collins caught Ogilvie with a left to the body that put the Killin man on the canvas. Ogilvie would be down again before the end of the round from another body shot.

In all Ogilvie would be down five times – he never really recovered from the first body shot that put him down, although he did gain praise for always trying to fight back.

Ogilvie did land a good right that momentarily stunned Collins in the fifth only for Collins to return fire. Referee Victor Loughlin had seen enough and stepped in 54 seconds into fifth.

Two debutants preceded the headlining bout and won their four-rounders. East Kilbride’s Paul Murphy had a good win against Jamie Quinn (Stockport), referee Paul O’Connor scoring the fight 40-36.

Luca Micheletti from Inverness earned a 40-36 win over Lydney’s Lewis Van Poetsch in a contest refereed by Darren Maxwell.

Aberdeen’s highly rated Dean Sutherland beat Atherton’s William Warburton convincingly at 60-54, and a step up to British level should be next for Sutherland. Kenny Pringle was the man in the middle.

Arbroath’s Corey McCulloch dominated in his win against Dale Arrowsmith (Hyde), referee Paul O’Connor scor 40-36 for McCulloch after four rounds.

Dubliner Wayne Kenny made his debut against Glasgow’s Gary McGuire and edged a 39-38 victory from referee Darren Maxwell in this four-round show-opener.

The Verdict Collins has made quick progress – it will be interesting to see how far he can go.
