Amir Khan has admitted that Floyd Mayweather could beat Ryan Garcia, depending on which version of the American shows up for their potential contest.
Despite being 49 years old, the former five-division world champion has been linked to a showdown against Garcia, who comes off a successful defence of his WBC title.
He became a world welterweight champion by dethroning Mario Barrios in February, scoring a unanimous decision victory after losing to Rolando Romero in May 2025.
Prior to that defeat, the American served a year-long doping ban and his career, by extension, seemed as if it could be in serious jeopardy.
But now, following his second-round stoppage of Conor Benn in September, Garcia is considered a top-level operator and one of the sport’s biggest stars.
As for Mayweather, the Hall of Famer is far removed from his prime but, regardless, Khan has suggested that the masterful technician could still defeat Garcia in a professional contest.
Speaking with Boyle Sports, the former world champion expressed this view while also criticising Mayweather for even mentioning Garcia’s name.
“If it was even half of the Mayweather we saw in his last couple of proper fights [before Conor McGregor], he would still give Ryan Garcia problems. But why would Ryan risk that against an older guy where he knows he can get beat?
“It doesn’t look good on the record. I wouldn’t entertain it. I think Mayweather is jumping on the bandwagon for a bit of PR because Ryan Garcia is a superstar in boxing now. I can see what Mayweather is doing.”
Khan added that he believes Mayweather is merely sniffing around for a lucrative payday, given his alleged financial issues in recent years.
