John Fury has taken exception to Ben Davison, who is working with Anthony Joshua ahead of his long-awaited showdown against Tyson Fury.
The two British heavyweights will finally square off on December 11, headlining a major Netflix and Ring event at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium.
Not only are they eager to settle their long-simmering rivalry, but both combatants are also set to collide for the WBA ‘super’ title, with the winner potentially being crowned a three-time world champion.
A more significant talking point, however, might be the involvement of Davison, who has re-joined Joshua’s coaching team after having previously trained the Watford man for three fights.
The last of those resulted in a fifth-round stoppage defeat to Daniel Dubois in September 2024, causing ‘AJ’ to begin training with Team Usyk.
Now, though, it would appear that the 36-year-old is based in Essex with Davison while maintaining communication with the coaches at Oleksandr Usyk’s gym.
It remains to be seen whether such a dynamic proves effective, especially on fight night, but Davison’s involvement has certainly caused a stir, given that he also previously acted as the head coach of Fury.
When asked for his reaction, ‘The Gypsy King’s’ father, John, told Playbook Boxing that the British trainer is just simply chasing the most lucrative opportunities.
“When people will sell their soul for a fiver … they will do, won’t they? It’s about the money.
“I told them about Ben Davison back in the day. I told them: These people are not your friends; they’re looking to get a leg up.
“Tyson gave him the biggest leg up in the world and what’s he done now? Traitored [betrayed] him. This is what you’re dealing with, horrible.”
Following his son’s five fights with Davison, including his first encounter with Deontay Wilder, John was particularly insistent on finding a new trainer.
