HAVING captured British, WBO Inter-Continental and European super-bantamweight titles in the last two years, Gavin McDonnell is keen to take the next step. But while he would love to challenge either WBA king Scott Quigg or IBF ruler Carl Frampton – who meet on February 27 in Manchester – down the line, Gavin realises twin brother Jamie, who has held world belts in the division below, is more likely to fight the victor.

“In all fairness our kid is a world-level fighter,” he told Boxing News. “I genuinely believe our kid would beat both of them. If there is a McDonnell fighting the winner of Quigg or Frampton it’s likely to be our kid. I don’t expect them to want to fight me. I don’t deserve it just yet but my brother has been all over the world smashing everybody in, so he does deserve the big fights.”

The magnanimous McDonnell is still eager to further his own career and while he will not yet challenge Quigg or Frampton, an eye-catching appearance on their undercard is in his sights.

“I’d love to get on the Quigg-Frampton bill against someone well known, a former world champion who can bring a bit of a tag and a reputation,” McDonnell, trained, like his sibling, by Dave Coldwell, continued. “Someone like who Lee Selby’s just beaten [Fernando Montiel], someone who’s been there and done it. I just wanna keep bombing forward. By my next fight I know I’ll be even better, and when it come down to it, it’s just about fighting and I know I can dig deep. I just wanna be on them big shows.”
