After his dismantling of Conor Benn, Ryan Garcia has been linked to a host of major names and finds himself well and truly amongst boxing’s biggest superstars.
Now, the Californian has revealed the targeted fight date for a mooted clash with Floyd Mayweather Jr.
Garcia needed only two rounds to make a first defence of his WBC welterweight title and show himself to be levels above Benn, halting the Brit within five-minutes of a dominant showing in Las Vegas.
Since then, ‘King Ry’ has been touted for a welterweight title unification with WBA world champion Teofimo Lopez, but the latter has been ordered to first defend his belt against Jack Catterall, meaning that the unification will either be delayed or Lopez will lose his title and face Garcia as a challenger.
Garcia has simultaneously been mentioned for a shock showdown with 49-year-old Mayweather, who has not fought professionally since 2017 but is seemingly willing to risk his iconic 50-fight undefeated record for a lucrative match-up with Garcia.
On a Kick live stream, ‘King Ry’ unveiled that he is targeting a fight date of Saturday, February 6, whether that be against Lopez or Mayweather.
“We are going to be fighting on February 6. We might fight Teofimo Lopez or Floyd Mayweather.”
Should Garcia-Mayweather take place on that date, a Mayweather win would break Bernard Hopkins’ record as the oldest world champion in boxing history.
With the proposed date being 18 days before the birthday of ‘TBE’, Mayweather would not become the first 50-year-old to win a world title, although he would presumably become the first 50-year-old to hold one – assuming he remained as champion until at least February 24.
