Eddie Hearn has offered a surprising prediction for Ryan Garcia vs Floyd Mayweather, which, according to the Matchroom promoter, is practically a done deal.
Garcia himself, meanwhile, has taken to social media and claimed that he is willing to put his WBC welterweight strap on the line in a fully-sanctioned contest.
Rather than defend it against a world-rated contender, though, it seems there is a genuine desire to scupper Mayweather’s iconic 50-0 record.
Along with that, Garcia is perhaps eager to defeat the Hall of Famer and, in doing so, say that he technically boasts a victory over one of the all-time greats.
But the reality, of course, is that Mayweather has not fought professionally since 2017 and, even then, his 10th-round stoppage of Conor McGregor was largely considered a glorified exhibition match.
Even at the age of 49, however, Matchroom boss Hearn has told Boxing News that he believes Mayweather could dethrone Garcia, who comes off a second-round finish over Conor Benn last month.
“I hate seeing Floyd Mayweather do these exhibitions. If he wants to come back and fight Ryan Garcia, I’m all for it … because that’s a real fight.
“You’ve got a WBC, reigning 147lb champion. By the way, I think Floyd beats him. But to come back and do it – that’s actually a sign of greatness.
“As I understand it, Ryan Garcia against Floyd Mayweather is on.”
While Hearn suspects the event will take place, it remains to be seen whether Mayweather is cleared to fight following the multi-million dollar lawsuit filed against him by CSI Sports.
