EXCLUSIVE Shane Mosley: I’m 70 per cent that I’ll fight again

SHANE MOSLEY is 43 and has not fought since November 2013.

Compared to Bernard Hopkins he may be a spring chicken but the Pomona, California man looked far from his formidable best in the period leading up to his second retirement 16 months ago. The boxing habit is an especially tough one to kick, however, and Mosley, a three-weight world champion buoyed by training fighters and his success in sparring some top current boxers, is strongly considering a comeback.

“I’m 70 per cent maybe that I’ll fight again,” Mosley told Boxing News. “You never know, Hopkins is basically 50 years old. Because of what we eat and that we’re health-conscious, we’re able to last a little longer.

“I’m training fighters but I’m keeping myself in shape as well because you never know if I’ll come back or not. When I get in the ring and spar with guys – like Shawn Porter, Brandon Rios and guys like that – they’re world champions and I’m able to do what I normally do.”

While Mosley is sorely tempted to return to active competition, he has another career opening up for him. Passing on his vast knowledge and giving younger charges the benefit of his broad experience could be the perfect role for him now.

“I enjoy training and teaching the art of boxing, the fundamentals,” he noted. “I’m training [New York middleweight] Curtis Stevens. I train my son as well, Shane Jnr, and he has three knockouts so after I’m finished – because I’m not sure I’m finished yet – that’s something I want to do.”

Mosley will venture to England on April 10 and spend six days here, meeting Matchroom founder Barry Hearn and possibly sparring IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook during the visit.
