ELLIE Scotney is just one belt away from becoming the undisputed super-bantamweight champion after dominating Yamileth Mercado over 10 rounds in New York. The ‘Queen of Catford’ added Mercado’s WBC belt to her own IBF and WBO straps. Only Mayelli Flores Rosquero’s WBA strap remains out of reach, currently.
Making her highly-anticipated American debut, Scotney was on point for every round, prevailing by scores of 100-90 for Tim Cheatham, joined by 98-92 apiece for Robert Perez and Robert Taylor.
Left hand happy, with the jab and hook working round after round, Scotney showed why she is the pick of the 122-pound weight class with her classy shots. Mercado’s lack of speed hurt her cause as Scotney’s fast hands landed time and again. Sparkle Lee was the third woman in the ring.
Ellie Scotney is now 11-0, with the elusive first pro knockout still beyond her grasp. She won’t mind as skills continue to pay the bills. Yamileth Mercado falls to 24-4 (5 KOs).
Scotney paid tribute to her friend and fellow boxer, the late Georgia O’Connor, who sadly lost her battle with cancer earlier in the year. The crowd applauded as Georgia’s name rang out around Madison Square Garden.
