Recent Moses Itauma opponent Dillian Whyte has weighed in on the rising star’s chances against former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder.
After 14 professional bouts, Itauma is yet to fight beyond the 18-minute mark, going the distance in two six-rounders and halting all other opposition within five rounds, including contenders Whyte and Jermaine Franklin Jr.
While the 21-year-old has faced two heavyweight world title challengers in Mariusz Wach and Whyte, the Kent-based talent has not shared the ring with a fighter who has claimed world honours. On the prospect of fighting Wilder, he has said he would like the ‘legend’s name on his record.
Speaking with iFL TV, Whyte, who Itauma dispatched of within two minutes last August, predicted that Itauma would come out on top if tasked with ‘The Bronze Bomber’, but warned that the hard-hitting American would still be a dangerous fight
“Yeah, [Itauma beats Wilder], but Wilder is a dangerous fight because Wilder just has that mad equaliser that he throws.”
While many would like to see the match-up, it does not seem high on the list of the Brit’s team at this moment. Itauma is set to return in August, with the frontrunner opponent being Filip Hrgovic.
Should he pass that stern test, he is currently positioned as the WBO’s mandatory challenger, meaning he is first in line for the winner of the rematch between champion Daniel Dubois and Fabio Wardley. He is also well placed to challenge for the WBA Regular belt against the winner of Murat Gassiev vs Tony Yoka, or face the IBF’s top contender Frank Sanchez.
As for Wilder, a rematch with Derek Chisora has been discussed following the American’s points win April.
