It may have taken 35 years, but the Benn family finally secured a win over the Eubanks this month.
At the fourth attempt, it fell to Nigel’s son Conor to do what his father could not in two tries. At Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on November 15, the 29-year-old comfortably outpointed Chris Eubank Jr to avenge the first loss of his own career back in April.
Two weeks on, Chris Eubank Sr –– a central figure in this decades-long rivalry –– has given his view of the fight on Instagram. With a longer video still to come, he offered followers a brief snapshot of his thoughts on his son’s defeat.
“The way I felt about the fight is that the fight should not have happened.
This was an extremely dangerous fight. The weight clauses that they insisted on… fighting at 160 –– well, he’s not a 160 fighter. He’s a heavier fighter. Him having to boil down to this weight is two or three fights in itself. But no one pays attention.”
The weight-clause subplot took on a life of its own during both build-ups. Eubank Jr agreed to fight at 160lbs and then accepted a rehydration clause that restricted him to gaining only 10lbs at the next-day weigh-in.
Junior criticised the agreement, while Benn’s team countered by insisting he signed the contract willingly. On fight night, Benn not only won a clear 12-round decision but dropped Eubank twice in the final round, though the stoppage eluded him as the clock ran out.
