Canelo Alvarez determines to unify the middleweight division this year

'I may win, I may lose, I may draw. But I’ll tell you what, my heart is a winning heart,' says Canelo Alvarez

CANELO ALVAREZ and Danny Jacobs completed a three-city media tour in Los Angeles on Monday.

The IBF title, held by Jacobs, and Canelo’s WBC and WBA middleweight championships will be on the line when they fight at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Alvarez has set out a clear goal for the rest of 2019, good news if you’re Demetrius Andrade, not such good news if you’re Gennady Golovkin.

Canelo wants to beat Jacobs of course and then go on to unify the middleweight division.

Andrade holds the WBO title and shares a broadcast platform with Alvarez in DAZN. Golovkin, Canelo’s great rival, might long for a third fight with Alvarez but he might have to go through Andrade to get there.

Alvarez’s trainer Eddy Reynoso declared, “Our objective this year is to win all the belts. Become the first Mexican world champion to unify [become undisputed] in history and Jacobs is there right now as the IBF champion.”

Alvarez said, “ I’ve always wanted to write history. To be the best you’ve got to beat the best. This is no exception. I love challenges. I want the people to know when they come to see my fights they’re going to get the best fights. I may win, I may lose, I may draw. But I’ll tell you what, my heart is a winning heart. And May 4 will not be an exception. I’m coming to win for you.

“I know he’s a tough opponent, I know he’s complicated but he’s a world champion.”

Jacobs himself attracted some ire from Canelo’s supporters when he insisted that Golovkin deserved to win his two fights with Alvarez.

“But it is my job to go in there and make a decisive win come May 4,” Danny said. “We’re going to give you guys exactly what you’re looking for.

“I believe I’m bigger, stronger. I’m a fast guy and I believe that I have the will and the desire to go inside that ring and be victorious. I’ve always stressed that I could knock Canelo Alvarez out and be the first to do so.”

Canelo Alvarez vs Danny Jacobs

Promoter Oscar De La Hoya was enthusiastic about the Canelo-Jacobs unification. “You have two gladiators who don’t have quit in their game. [Jacobs] having to survive cancer, having to come back and win two world titles. Do you think anything’s going to stop him? You think that when he sees Canelo in the middle of the ring he’s going to be scared? Have fear? No. Then you have Canelo. When he was born there was no fear in him,” De La Hoya said. “Canelo faces everybody, he faces anybody.

“I guarantee you this is going to be the fight of the year.”
