AUSTRALIA’S Lucas Browne defeated Ruslan Chagaev in Grozny on Saturday.
Chagaev dropped him to the canvas in the sixth round but Browne came through to halt Ruslan in the 10th round.
Browne can call himself a world champion of sorts, this was for the WBA’s regular heavyweight title. Tyson Fury is of course the WBA Super champion.
“I’m so proud to have won this title for Australia. Obviously I can improve but I showed that my heart and power can never be questioned,” Browne said.
“I’m thrilled to have made history. It was a big step up, but I got the win and I thank everyone for the support. Words can’t describe how I feel right now.”
His manager, Ricky Hatton hopes to see Browne take on Fury or Anthony Joshua. “I can’t see any problems making fights with Joshua or Fury and we would have some massive heavyweights fights here. Lucas has fought five times here and has a good fan base,” Hatton told Boxing News.
“I am very happy for Lucas. He came up the hard way. He was not an Olympian. In fact, it was just a few years ago, that he was working doors at the night clubs and he has put in the hard work.”
