Chris Eubank Jr is facing calls to retire from the boxing community today, but having shared back-to-back fights with him, does Conor Benn agree?
The historic rivalry between both families was rekindled in front of 65,000 fans at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. And although the rematch failed to match the wild, frenetic energy of their first encounter, the Benns finally claimed a win over the Eubanks at the fourth attempt.
Few predicted a one-sided points victory for Benn, but the 29-year-old can now look ahead with renewed purpose as he targets his first world title.
The same cannot be said for the 36-year-old Eubank, who looked a shadow of the man who thrilled fans in April. Magnanimous in defeat, he now faces the question dominating discussion today: should he retire after a 39-fight, 14-year career?
At last night’s post-fight press conference, a visibly tired but satisfied Benn was asked for his view. ‘The Destroyer’ referenced the welcome news that Eubank is soon to become a father, stating that is more important than any retirement decision.
“He’s got more important things to worry about. He’s won in life with getting his twin boys. If I was him, I would look at boxing [and] see what reasons he’s boxing. Ultimately he’s a dad of two now –– that’s always a priority.
“It’s not down to me to say should he retire, should he not retire, that’s between him and his team. He’s got bigger things happening right now.”
While Eubank Jr’s future is up in the air, Benn is expected to head back to welterweight and look to challenge one of the reigning world champions.
