Amateur focus: Jimmy Egan’s ABC

Tyson Fury's amateur club celebrates its 35th anniversary with a show this Saturday

John Dennen

13th January, 2015

JIMMY EGAN’S ABC will hold a 35th anniversary show at The Forum in Wythenshawe on Saturday (January 17).

Jimmy Egan opened the club on January 14 1980. Jimmy died of cancer a decade ago and his two sons Steve and Shaun carried on his work. Despite having full-time jobs they run the club every evening and take young boxers to compete across the UK at weekends. Over the years they have had 21 national champions and 10 professional boxers, including Tyson Fury.

“I’m like my dad,” Steve has said previously. “I love turning kids into nice lads and I love taking kids who are scared of their shadow and turning them into national champions. For me there is more pleasure in taking a kid who might be a bit rough around the edges and teaching him respect and improving him as a person.”

They have a 99 year lease at their current site but have no money to improve their facilities. They would love to add opportunities for the elderly and cater for those with disabilities.

10 bouts are planned for their January 17 show. As well as general seats for £10, corporate ringside tables are available, £500 for a table of 10, which includes a three course meal. There will also be an auction, raffles, entertainment and special guests. The money will be raised for the club, to keep it as a community facility, keeping kids off the street and shaping them into focused, driven, employable young men and women.
