60 second interview: Connor Edney

Portsmouth's Connor Edney is a big fan of Roy Jones Jnr and believes you regret the opportunities you don't take in life, writes Andrew Fairley

60 second interview: Connor Edney

When and why you started boxing:
A friend of mine was boxing, so I thought I’d go along to a session and give it a go. I was 10 years old at the time.

Favourite all-time fighter:
Roy Jones Jnr because he was the whole package in his prime. He had great speed and timing, plus the power to get anybody out of there.

Best fight you’ve seen:
The first Diego Corrales-Jose Luis Castillo fight.

Personal career highlight:
Reaching the national quarter-finals as an amateur, having not competed for years previously.

Toughest opponent:
The best person I’ve boxed against, in my opinion, is Lucas Ballingall. I fought him as an amateur. He’s very skilled and talented.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
I have great hand speed and footwork, but I need to improve defensively.

Training tip:
My best advice for boxing training could relate to anything in life that you want to do. Don’t quit and always keep going. I’ve found that half the battle for people is getting to the gym, but once they’re there they love it. You must always stay dedicated.

Favourite meal/restaurant:
I’d go for the butterfly chicken at Nando’s.

Best friends in boxing:
[Fellow Portsmouth pros] Michael McKinson, Lucas Ballingall and David Birmingham.

Other sportsman you would like to be:
Probably Conor McGregor.

Last film/TV show you saw:
I watched the film Fractured recently.

Who would play you in a film of your life:
I’d choose Jason Statham.

Have you ever been starstruck:
I can’t say that I have actually.

Last time you cried:
I cried when I beat Pablo Narvaez over four rounds on my professional debut last month.

Best advice received:
You only regret the opportunities that you don’t take.

Worst rumour about yourself:
I haven’t heard any rumours about myself to be honest.

Something not many people know about you:
I’m always with a lot of people but I enjoy spending time on my own and just chilling out. Whether that be watching a film or playing a computer game.
