60 second interview: Sam Horsfall

Paul Wheeler talks to Sam Horsfall, a man who likes everything to be just perfect

Paul Wheeler

19th September, 2019

60 second interview: Sam Horsfall

When and why you started boxing:
I was 18 years old. I’d always wanted to do it but had never got around to it. I started at Frimley Boxing Club with [trainer] Matt Gorton and I’m still there now.

Favourite all-time fighter:
Floyd Mayweather because he was so smart in the ring. Andre Ward, too.

Best fight you’ve seen:
The Anthony Joshua-Wladimir Klitschko fight at Wembley Stadium is the best I’ve seen live.

Personal career highlight:
Turning professional is my biggest achievement so far.

Toughest opponent:
It was someone I fought on the unlicensed circuit, before I became a pro. I can’t remember his name – we all just used to call him “The Russian”. It was a real good, tough fight. I took a count in the third but didn’t go down. It was five rounds of war, ending in a draw.

Best and worst attributes as a boxer:
My main strength is that I’m very rangy. I don’t have any weaknesses – I’m a confident all-round fighter.

Training tip:
Never give up and keep pushing through.

Favourite meal/restaurant:
I’ll eat anything, although I do like a good steak. The Exchequer pub in Crookham Village is a good place to eat.

Best friends in boxing:
My main training partner, Aaron Collins, and my trainer, Matt Gorton.

Other sportsman you would like to be:
Floyd Mayweather because of his money and the life that he lives.

Last film/TV show you saw:
It was a horror movie called TheOpen House.

Who would play you in a film of your life:
I’d go for Hugh Jackman to play me.

Have you ever been starstruck:
I felt starstruck by Anthony Joshua.

Last time you cried:
God knows! I really can’t remember. That makes me sound like I’m a bit heartless doesn’t it?!

Best advice received:
If you can’t afford it, then don’t buy it.

Worst rumour about yourself:
Nothing really. Rumours are said behind your back for a reason – so you don’t hear them!

Something not many people know about you:
I’m a very tidy person – a real perfectionist. I like everything to be just perfect.
