OVER the last few blogs, we have outlined a number of nutritional strategies that, when implemented, can make a boxer’s life a lot easier. These range from tips on losing body-fat to snack options that can fuel you ready for a fight. However, a lot of nutritional habits need to be tailored to suit the individual boxer. So what benefits can a qualified sports nutritionist bring to the plate, as well as but not restricted to avoiding the type of drug ban that recently befell tennis star Maria Sharapova?

1. Knowledgeable advice on supplements

A REGISTERED sports nutritionist will know the exact supplements a boxer can take to aid performance, recovery and training. They will be able to provide tailored information regarding timing, total, and most importantly type of supplement. They will also help to steer a boxer clear of any banned substances and make sure you avoid any risk of failing drugs tests and copping a drug ban.

2. Help making weight

‘CUTTING’ for a boxer can be one of the hardest points of any training camp. A registered sports nutritionist can tailor your calorie intake to facilitate a gradual loss of body-mass in a precise amount of time. This means that you should not need to spend vast periods of time dehydrating, not eating or having to ‘sweat’ the weight out.

4. Assistance in making the right choices

KNOWING what a boxer needs to have from a nutritional point of view is one thing, however, providing the right foods for the athlete is another. All boxers are different and have different preferences. Nutritionist can create meals that boxers love to eat, but which also provide all the nutritional help they need to prepare, recover and fuel for a fight.

5. Expertise after the weigh-in

AFTER all the training sessions, then the weigh-in, a boxer needs to supply fuel to the body that will aid them through the fight. A sports nutritionist can carefully plan out a tailored nutrition plan that can supply the energy, hydration and protein to prepare a boxer in a short period of time post-weigh-in. This means the boxer can go into the ring with the best nutrition possible. It’s clear how big role a registered (preferably SENr) nutritionist can play in aiding a boxer’s training, weigh-in and fight preparation. Avoiding detrimental weight-making practices can facilitate better performances in training and carefully supplying the nutrients to the body post-weigh-in could make all the difference when a boxer enters the ring.
