Canelo’s next opponent announced by Turki Alalshikh

CANELO’S next opponent is all but officially confirmed after Turki Alalshikh dropped another tweet naming IBF super-middleweight champion William Scull as the man to face the Mexican legend on May 3.

Cuba’s Scull, 23-0 (9 KOs), picked up the vacant title with a unanimous decision victory over Vladimir Shishkin in Germany last October. He will now become part one of a four-fight series involving Canelo, starting on the Cinco de Mayo weekend.

For so long evading the advances of boxing’s latest powerbroker, Canelo will head to Riyadh for the holiday date. If the Guadalajara man wins, as expected, he will reclaim undisputed status at super-middleweight. His next bout against Terence Crawford in September will have even greater significance as a result.

While some view Scull as a fall guy, similar to previous victim Avni Yildirim, the Cuban will not complain as winning the Canelo lottery guarantees a hefty payday. He has featured on a Canelo undercard in the past, and his team has remained confident of snaring this opportunity.
