Frank Bruno has admitted that one former champion would have overcome both himself and two of his former rivals.
During the 1990s, British fight fans were obsessed with the heavyweight division, as Bruno and Lennox Lewis jostled for the heavyweight crown and represented the nation, whilst Mike Tyson captivated the boxing universe.
Bruno fell short in his first three challenges for the world title, losing to both Tyson and Lewis before finally dethroning Oliver McCall in 1995, only to then lose the WBC title in a rematch with Tyson the following year.
Meanwhile, Lewis and Tyson, alongside Evander Holyfield, were seeking to prove themselves as the standout heavyweight of the generation, and were continuously linked to a clash with one another, but the pair would not meet until 2002.
Lewis dominated that battle and halted a below-par ‘Iron Mike’ in round eight, but some fans believe that the outcome may have been different if it took place a few years prior, when the Brownsville-born bruiser was closer to his prime.
Although, speaking with Clubhouse Boxing, Bruno declared his belief that George Foreman, if at his best, would have been the man to beat during the 1990s, picking a prime ‘Big George’ in fantasy fights against himself, Lewis and Tyson.
“[Mike Tyson vs. George Foreman], what a scary one. It would depend on what side of the bed George Foreman woke up on, before he came back, I don’t think Tyson would have lasted that much.
“He may have had the sharpness but, if George Foreman caught him, he would be doing some breakdancing and body popping at the same time.”
“[George Foreman vs. Frank Bruno?] George Foreman.”
“[George Foreman vs. Lennox Lewis?] George Foreman.”
Despite first getting his hands on the heavyweight crown in 1973, Foreman astonishingly reigned in the 1990s himself, dethroning Michael Moorer in 1994 in a legendary knockout win at the age of 45 years old.
