FLOYD MAYWEATHER is not known for attending fights for fun. Even in the run up to the biggest fight of his career, when he fought Manny Pacquiao last year, Mayweather seemed almost almost bored of the sport. Yet he appeared at Pacquiaoโs latest fightย on Saturday, a points win over Jessie Vargas, sparking speculation that a rematch between Mayweather and Pacquiao could be on the cards for 2017.
After the Vargas fight Pacquiaoโs trainer, Freddie Roach said of Floyd, โI didnโt see him but that was nice of him. He came by my gym a couple of times over the past couple of months and [was] very nice, polite. I hope heโs looking for Manny Pacquiao but weโll see.โ
Mannyโs promoter Bob Arum however played down thoughts of Mayweather-Pacquiao 2. โFloyd is retired. Period. As far as weโre concerned and as far as heโs telling us heโs retired and I respect that,โ Arum said simply.
โHe was very nice. He called. He said he wanted to come to the fight so Todd Duboef got him credentials and a great seat right behind the commentators and we got tickets for his entourage.โ
On his initial thoughts for Pacquiaoโs next fight Arum suggested, โOff the cuff, without exploring all options, I would say Terence Crawford โฆ Vasyl Lomachenko โฆ and maybe depending on the timing Danny Garcia or [Keith] Thurman, would be possibilities, so all of those guys would be in the mix.โ
