AS their convention began in Baku, Azerbaijan, the WBC revealed that their Board of Governors have mandated a Gennady Golovkin versus Canelo Alvarez rematch.
Gennady Golovkin holds the WBC middleweight title as well as the WBA and IBF world championships.
Whether such an order will do anything to hasten a potential rematch is another issue however. The WBC have tried to force Canelo and Golovkin to fight in the past to no avail then. But Alvarez vacated their middleweight title, which he won against Miguel Cotto and defended against Amir Khan, despite the WBC urging him to fight Golovkin last year. He didn’t even challenge for the WBC title when he eventually fought Golovkin in September.
However, a rematch is expected. Both fighters were open to it after their controversial draw in Las Vegas but a rematch will no doubt have to wait until their respective teams can agree terms.
