TYSON FURY may or may not be returning to the ring – that much remains to be seen – but either way, ‘The Gypsy King’ is nonetheless set to extend his involvement in boxing.
The two-time world heavyweight champion called time on his storied career last April, just a few months removed from his second encounter with Oleksandr Usyk.
Back then, his announcement – which remains difficult to fully believe – arrived as a sizable shock, especially when considering his two mightily-impressive performances last year.
Despite dropping points decisions to Usyk on both occasions, the Morecambe man showed that, even now, he seems a fair way off from being over the hill.
But while Fury has stayed true to form, teasing a potential comeback over the past few months, his most recent comments would suggest that a ring return is now firmly off the table.
Speaking on FurociTV, he said: “There’s no actual reason for me to go back in the boxing ring. I’m 37 years old, I’ve been punched for the last 25 years, what do I want to go back to boxing for?”
As for Fury’s manager, Spencer Brown, who remains one of his closest friends, it would appear that no further information regarding a possible comeback could be gleaned.
“Whether Tyson does come back – who knows? Has he got an itch he wants to scratch? Maybe,” Brown told Boxing News.
“But, at the moment, he seems to be very happy. His new Netflix documentary finishes soon, and then we might hear a bit more news.
“I speak to him everyday and see him three or four times a week.”
While Fury’s fighting future remains uncertain, Brown, who founded Goldstar Promotions, has revealed that the 37-year-old could soon dip his toe into the management and promotional side of the sport.
As a natural born salesman, and indeed showman, it is hardly surprising, really, that Fury has flirted with the idea of working alongside Brown.
And, already, it seems that the charismatic pugilist has begun the promotional push for Agit Kabayel’s return to Germany on January 10, with the event being delivered by Queensberry Promotions and Goldstar.
Shortly after the WBC ‘interim’ heavyweight champion’s fight at the Rudolf Weber-Arena, Oberhausen, was announced, Fury took to Instagram and showed his support.
Adding clarity to the situation, Brown said: “They go back a long way, him and Kabayel, and we’re just doing a deal with Tyson now for him to join Goldstar.
“He’s been behind Goldstar for a long time – it was him and Turki Alalshikh who created it. I just came up with the name, but they pushed it forward.
“[Fury] would be a co-promoter if he does jump on board, and I’m sure he will.”
