ROMAN GONZALEZ, widely regarded as the best fighter in the world, will continue to grow into a star, according to promoter Tom Loeffler.
Loeffler, of K2 Promotions – who co-promote Gonzalez alongside Teiken Promotions – has helped guide the masterful Nicaraguan to headline status in America.
Gonzalez will top his first major US bill on September 10 when he attempts to become a four-weight world champion against WBC super-flyweight boss Carlos Cuadras.
“It’s a big deal for Roman to headline HBO and to headline a big arena show, at The Forum [in California], “Loeffler told Boxing News.
“It’s a split site [broadcast] where HBO will show the [Gennady] Golovkin-[Kell] Brook fight live and then they’ll run a re-broadcast with the live fight from Roman.
“It’s a great opportunity for him, he’s moving up in weight into his fourth division against an undefeated champion so you actually have four undefeated champions fighting on the same night which, in this day and age, is really hard to put together on a television broadcast.”
Having already won world honours at straw, light-fly and flyweight, Gonzalez will become the first Nicaraguan to conquer four weight divisions should he beat Cuadras, going one better than his mentor Alexis Arguello in the process.
In the past 15 months, Gonzalez’ brilliance has moved into the limelight as he has boxed on Golovkin’s undercards in his last three fights, all of which aired on HBO and major broadcasters in the UK.
At 29, ‘Chocolatito’ now looks to be hitting his prime and Loeffler remains confident his stock will only continue to rise.
“Many people rate him pound-for-pound number one in the world,” he continued.
“Since he’s had the three fights on Gennady’s shows, on HBO, his profile has skyrocketed so now he’s actually become one of the most talked about fighters in the world. He’s already 45-0. I think it’ll just keep increasing.”
