BN: Who do you see winning this monthโs fight between Terence Crawford and Errol Spence?
Itโs definitely a good fight. Itโs a great fight. Iโve been flip-flopping [about the winner] if Iโm being honest. Some days I feel like Crawford wins and other days I feel like Spence wins. Itโs honestly a toss-up. It just depends how they go about it, you know? Spence is clearly the bigger, stronger fighter. Crawford is the smarter fighter. It comes down to who gets hurt first โ I think thatโs what it comes down to. I donโt think [itโll go the distance].
Iโm happy that itโs finally happening but I think it should have happened a long time ago. Nevertheless Iโm just grateful that itโs happening โย maybe the welterweight division can start moving again.
BN: Does that mean you agree with those who say that you and Jaron โBootsโ Ennis will succeed Spence and Crawford at the top of the welterweight division?
I think so. We have some up-and-coming welterweights โย theyโre coming up too โย me included. Weโre just waiting to get our shot.
It could be [a new era]. It definitely could be โย weโll just have to wait and see. I donโt like to hype myself up a lot. Iโm not that kind of fighter. I donโt like to call anyone out. I do what Iโm supposed to do. I train hard at the gym. I make my statements in the ring โ not on Twitter or Instagram or something, or even in interviews. I just do my thing in the ring โย thatโs just how I am.
It depends if they move up in weight or not. We donโt know whatโs in store for them. Errolโs a pretty big 147; he could move to 154 at anytime. Crawford, I donโt know what his plans are โย and what their future moves are depends on the outcome as well. Thereโs a whole lot of options โย a whole lot of ways it could play out.
BN: How dangerous is Eimantas Stanionis?
Itโs a real dangerous fight. Itโs definitely going to be one of my hardest fights to date. Itโs very competitive โย a very explosive fight. Weโve got two of the top welterweights, undefeated, going at it, and our styles complement each other. Itโs going to be violent in there, and itโs going to be exciting.
I never thought of it like that [as make or break]. I do see those fights happen a lot. I treat every fight as though itโs going to be my hardest fight. So, every fight for me is do or die. Itโs like that for every fight. So, really, Iโm not thinking about it that way โย itโs that I always think about it that way. Thereโs nothing different going on.
Heโs undefeated. Thereโs really nothing I can say thatโs not obvious โ heโs a good fighter. Heโs a come-forward fighter. He brings the action. Heโs aggressive.
BN: How good is Jaron โBootsโ Ennis?
Itโs an interesting fight, for sure, and weโll just have to wait and see for that to happen, but itโs definitely interesting. I donโt watch him fight a whole lot, but I canโt say nothing bad against him โย heโs a good fighter.
I donโt think his opponent [Roiman Villa] is easy at all. We saw what he did with [Rashidi] Ellis [earning a majority decision in January] โ which proved anyone can be dangerous at anytime, so I donโt like doubting fighters. I donโt care about what people think about whoโs ahead and whoโs not. Iโm the best welterweight โย thatโs the bottom line.
BN: How frustrating is it that youโre fighting on the same night on separate promotions, and therefore dividing your potential audience?
Itโs conflicting. It really is conflicting โ especially when you see fighters coming out of the same weight class as well. โWhich one am I gonna watch?โ Iโm not necessarily worried about it, because I have something else to worry about that night, but if I had a say so, then yes, we should have fought on different nights.
BN: How are you recovering from long Covid?
Iโve never felt better. This is the best Iโve felt in a long time. Iโm just ready to rock and roll.
I hope [itโs not going to recur]. Of course, we donโt know everything about it, but as far as we know now, and how I feel, about my health right now, this is the best Iโve felt for a long time. So weโre going off of what I feel, and I feel great.
The last time [I struggled with it] is pretty much when the fight got cancelled [it had been scheduled for April 29], โcause thatโs when I started my whole recovery process, and weโve been sticking to it.
BN: How does it make you feel when people play down Covidโs severity?
I donโt really think anything of it. Itโs just like boxing โ people are going to have their own opinions, and a lot of opinions are wrong, so the best thing to do for yourself is just to let it go through one ear and out the other ear. Donโt worry about it. They just keep on saying stupid stuff all the time. It doesnโt matter what it is. It could be Covid; it could be sports; it could be politics. Thatโs just how people are. I honestly just do my best to not care about things.
When I was struggling with it, the only thing I was worried about was getting better. I didnโt care about any outside noise or anything, it was just, โHow was I going to get better? How are we going to make this work?โ Thatโs all I was worried about.
It got to the point where I was just going up a flight of stairs โย weโre talking seven, eight steps โ and I was getting tired, and my body would hurt. I had a lot of brain fog. It wasnโt just physical; it was mental, too. I had brain fog; my reflexes were gone; reactions not there. I would just say, overall, my physical abilities โย not just strength โย but reflexes and even technique were just going downhill. Itโs definitely not a good thing. Weโve had to work our way around it. I donโt want to say this in a bad way but we definitely did the best we could to make it better, and Iโm happy at how well weโve done.
BN: Did it make you fear for your future as a fighter?
Iโm not going to lie and say that I wasnโt worried about it. I was definitely worried about it. But, to me, it was another obstacle. โHow are we going to get over this? How are we going to deal with it, and solve it?โ And I feel like we did.
BN: As one of Golden Boy Promotionsโ leading fighters at a difficult time for them, how much additional pressure do you feel under to win on Saturday?
I donโt feel any pressure to win. I feel like Iโm supposed to win at all times. Iโve never felt any pressure to win, ever โย itโs just what I was made to do. It was just โย itโs just inside me. When you feel pressure, you feel, โI have to win โย I have to winโ. I donโt think like that. I think, โIโm going to win. Iโm training for this fight โย Iโm training hard. Iโm going to win.โ Itโs not, โIโve got to winโ. Itโs, โIโm going to winโ.
BN: Whatโs your relationship like with Oscar De La Hoya?
We havenโt talked in a while. We donโt text or call each other every day โ itโs not a bad relationship. Itโs just, Iโm doing my thing and he does his thing. I just talk to my manager, and talk to my dad who also talks to my manager. My job is just to train. I donโt really deal with all the promoting and all that stuff. Unless we need to do some promoting โ they need to come to the gym and do some photography โย other than that I just do my job in the gym. My miles; conditioning; recovery. Thatโs my job right there.
BN: How does it make you feel when he and Ryan Garcia argue in the public eye?
Iโd rather not talk about it โcause thatโs not my โ thatโs not my situation. Iโd rather stay out of that.
BN: Golden Boy were once as influential as they were because of the reputations of De La Hoya, Bernard Hopkins and more as great fighters among the fighters they sought to promote. How relevant are those reputations to young fighters in 2023?
I definitely see where youโre coming from. Growing up I watched [Manny] Pacquiao; [Miguel] Cotto; [Oscar] De La Hoya; Sergio Martinez. Even [Floyd] Mayweather; Shane Mosley; Kermit Cintron. It was that era right there โ those are the fighters I was familiar with. So of course Iโm going to feel excited just working with one of those guys โย one of the people I used to watch on HBO. HBO was the biggest boxing programme at the time.
All those fighters like that โ Oscar has retired since then โย I see what youโre talking about. How these newer fighters donโt โย understand? โ who theyโre working with, is how I want to put it. Thatโs just how it is. They just donโt understand the magnitude, I guess. They donโt know how good these guys were.
When I first met Oscar I think it was for a press conference for [Saul] Canelo [Alvarez]-[Liam] Smith in Arlington, Texas, at the Cowboys Stadium [in 2016], and I was happy to meet him. Bernard Hopkins wasnโt there. I think I first met Bernard when I made my pro debut, in Indio California [also in 2016, against Julio Rodas], and of course I was happy to meet him. Just being in that scenery โ it was almost not real, because it was living legends right in front of me. Just there. Just, conversation and working โ depending on what theyโre doing. Itโs quite an experience to be a part of that world. I remember them as a great fighters.
