THE EDWARDS brothers have never hidden how competitive they are, and over the years, there will have been a few rounds shared in the ring to decide who is the better fighter.
Both are now nearing 10-year careers and both have become world champions in that time.
After Charlie won the European bantamweight title on Friday night (September 27) and Sunny’s rivalry with Galal Yafai being settled on November 30, Boxing News looks back on the best wins the two siblings have between them.
Sunny Edwards vs. Moruti Mthalane
The younger Edwards’ crowning moment. Mthalane hadn’t tasted defeat for 13 years and had beaten Zolani Tete and John Riel Casimero in that time. From the first round, Edwards never looked like losing.
Charlie Edwards vs. Cristofer Rosales
Rosales came in having stopped Daigo Higa and knocking out Paddy Barnes. Two years on from his first world title loss to Casimero, the older Edwards boxed to a gameplan and got his tactics spot on winning wide on all three cards.
Sunny Edwards vs. Adrian Curiel
Edwards reputation suffered a knock against Bam Rodriguez but his comeback fight against Curiel – who shocked Sivenathi Nontshinga in 2023 – was the ideal test. Edwards outclassed the Mexican.
Sunny Edwards vs. Felix Alvarado
Alvarado would be Sunny’s third IBF flyweight title defence, and the Nicaraguan certainly had the pedigree, albeit at light flyweight. Edwards controlled the first six rounds and absorbed the best of Alvarado in the second six to win a unanimous decision.
Charlie Edwards vs. Angel Moreno
Edwards proved himself to be one of the best flyweights in the world dominating the inferior Moreno over 12 rounds. From the opening bell the WBC champion was the superior fighter and bossed the one-time former sparring partner of Edwards.
Sunny Edwards vs. Muhammad Waseem
Waseem had gone the distance with Mthalane in 2018. Edwards switched stances and dealt with Waseem, who tried his best to unsettle the Brit, but in all honesty, Edwards won without hitting top gear.
Sunny Edwards vs. Thomas Essomba
The first Edwards family victory over Essomba. Sunny boxed on the back foot, taking few risks – because he didn’t need to. Essomba got desperate at times. A win that aged well.
Charlie Edwards vs. Thomas Essomba
A must-win at this stage of his career. Essomba made it a competitive fight when he got himself back into the contest but only after Edwards had put himself ahead. A first European title for Charlie, who avoided being trapped by his opponent on enough occasions to gain the win.
