5. Canelo Alvarez
While he’s never quite looked the same since losing to Dmitry Bivol, Alvarez’s influence outside the ring, when compared to other fighters, is almost unmatched. He has, of course, become his own boss – much like a prime Mayweather – and will soon enter the biggest fight of this year, live on Netflix. The appeal of Canelo, therefore, remains strong enough to capture the attention of a streaming juggernaut.
4. Bob Arum
If Arum has slowed down at the age of 93, it’s only by a little bit. The Top Rank boss remains the most important promoter in American boxing, and his company’s continuing focus on international athletes and markets differentiates them from most of the competition. Losing broadcast deals with ESPN in the US and Sky Sports in the UK dealt a major blow to Arum, but his stable is still comprised of some of the biggest names in the sport.
3. Eddie Hearn
Hearn has firmly established himself as the sport’s only global promoter. Having exploited markets in the UK, US, Australia and Mexico, there’s no denying that Matchroom boasts a truly worldwide stable. With a cushty seat alongside Turki Alalshikh, too, Hearn’s influence now stretches across the dunes of what is, by far, boxing’s most crucial territory. His fighters, by extension, are the beneficiaries of such heavy investment.
2. Frank Warren
Warren, now in his eighth decade, is enjoying yet another purple patch after moving his Queensberry Promotions stable to DAZN – right alongside Hearn. Warren would once have spat at the idea of working with Hearn, but they’ve gone from bitter rivals to bedfellows on the world’s leading boxing broadcaster. Neck and neck in many ways, Warren leads Hearn after his company thrashed Matchroom in last year’s groundbreaking 5 Vs 5 cross- promotional team concept.
1. Turki Alalshikh
The honeymoon period shows no signs of abating as the Chairman of Saudi Arabia’s General Entertainment Authority continues to pour money into the sport and consistently deliver the best fights. Alalshikh has also relaunched The Ring magazine, remodelled the DAZN pricing structure, and achieved the unthinkable in bringing Eddie Hearn and Frank Warren together – a match more difficult to make than any involving two boxers.
