LIVERPOOL’S Stephen Smith will fight Jose Pedraza for the IBF world super-featherweight title in New York on March 26.
Smith became mandatory for Pedraza’s title when he stopped Devis Boschiero in September and purse bids, which were scheduled for yesterday, were cancelled after the two sides agreed terms.
The IBF confirmed the news and that the fight will take place in New York, meaning Smith’s first attempt at world honours will also be his first fight in the States.
Smith, whose sole defeat came to Lee Selby at featherweight in 2011, will be looking to emulate his younger brother Liam who recently won the vacant WBO world super-welterweight bauble.
Puerto Rican Pedraza is unbeaten in 21 outings and made the first defence of his title in October, earning a fortunate split decision over Edner Cherry.
