OLYMPIC silver medallist Shakur Stevenson won his first world title on Saturday (October 26) at at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center in Nevada.
He beat Joet Gonzalez on a unanimous points verdict to win the vacant WBO featherweight crown. Judges Eric Cheek, Glenn Feldman and Dave Moretti all scored 119-109 for Stevenson.
“This is a great feeling. One of the best feelings of my life,” Stevenson said. “I have a lot of respect for Joet. He is a great fighter. I have nothing against him. If he decides to be cool with me, I’ll be cool with him.”
At once Stevenson set his sights on a unification with Britainโs Josh Warrington, the IBF featherweight champion.
“Josh Warrington, you are a champion, now I am a champion. Let’s do this,โ Stevenson declared.
โI want to unify titles.”
