He beat Joet Gonzalez on a unanimous points verdict to win the vacant WBO featherweight crown. Judges Eric Cheek, Glenn Feldman and Dave Moretti all scored 119-109 for Stevenson.

“This is a great feeling. One of the best feelings of my life,” Stevenson said. “I have a lot of respect for Joet. He is a great fighter. I have nothing against him. If he decides to be cool with me, I’ll be cool with him.”

At once Stevenson set his sights on a unification with Britain’s Josh Warrington, the IBF featherweight champion.

“Josh Warrington, you are a champion, now I am a champion. Let’s do this,” Stevenson declared.
