SUPER-LIGHTWEIGHT rivals Ryan Garcia and Teofimo Lopez have parted ways with esteemed coach Eddy Reynoso ahead of their upcoming assignments.
The pair were supposed to train alongside each other in the lead-up to their outings on May 2, when Garcia, 24-1 (20 KOs), will headline a card at Times Square, New York.
Returning from his year-long ban after testing positive for ostarine, a performance-enhancing substance, last year, the 26-year-old has somehow earned himself a lucrative clash with Rolando Romero.
Lopez, 21-1 (13 KOs), meanwhile, will appear on the undercard to make the third defence of his WBO world title against mandatory challenger Arnold Barboza Jr.
But while the pair have seemingly been on a collision course for several years โ often exchanging barbs over social media โ they had nonetheless become gymmates last month.
That rather bizarre dynamic, however, has now been firmly put to bed, with Reynoso confirming to boxing journalist Dan Rafael that he will no longer train either fighter.
Instead, Garcia and Lopez are set to work under the tutelage of their fathers, as both Henry and Lopez Sr have, of course, remained in their corners.
While an explanation of the split is yet to emerge, it would appear that Reynoso was the one who decided to separate himself from the two fighters.
The head coach is, after all, preparing both Canelo Alvarez and Jaime Munguia for their fights on May 3 โ the day after Garcia and Lopez return to the ring.
So clearly, Reynoso well and truly has his hands full, with Canelo taking on William Scull for the undisputed super-middleweight crown and Munguia rematching Bruno Surace.
