Regan Slaymaker interviewed Richard Commey shortly after his last fight, before it emerged that the former world champion is set to face Ashton Sylve on October 18.
GEORGE KAMBOSOS JR could be tempted into a fight with Richard Commey, whose name value might just offer the Australian enough of an incentive to continue his career.
Along with Kambosos, the former IBF lightweight champion is targeting a potential outing against Danny Garcia, clearly hoping for one last run at the top of his sport.
It was just under three weeks ago that Commey returned to the ring, ending his three-fight winless streak with a second-round stoppage victory in Detroit.
His last three fights did include defeats to Vasyl Lomachenko, Jose Ramirez and then a draw to Jose Pedraza, which only made the 38-year-old’s successful comeback all the more satisfying.
“I’ve been away for a couple of years; it feels good to be back in the ring,” Commey said in an interview. “I am very happy. I kept my composure and did what I had to do.”
Whilst the calibre of opposition wasn’t quite what Commey is used to, a win for the Ghanaian should nonetheless be enough for him to secure a big fight.
In our interview, Commey called for a fight with former unified world champion Kambosos, while also divulging his quest to get back to the top-table.
“There are a few guys out there [who] I really want to fight, [including] the likes of Kambosos,” he insisted.
“Kambosos shared the ring with Loma [Lomachenko], he shared the ring with Teofimo [Lopez]; I shared the ring with Loma, I shared the ring with Teofimo.
“Me and Kambosos is going to be a great fight [should it get made]. If I get the chance to fight him before the year ends, I will take it with all my heart!”
Kambosos, who is coming off a defeat himself, could well be tempted into a fight with Commey.
But while a fight with Kambosos might not be next, sources close to Commey have suggested that ‘RC’ could feature on the undercard of former unified world champion Garcia’s return on October 18, with the pair potentially set to meet if both are successful in Brooklyn, New York.
Commey was originally set to fight in Nigeria, as part of the Amir Khan Promotions bill on October 1.
Whilst no longer fighting on the card, the Ghanaian-born veteran has expressed how the event will not only highlight the amount of talent that is coming out of the continent, but exactly how hard each fighter must work in order to get to the top.
Explaining the difficult journey that many fighters in Africa are faced with, Commey said: “I’m speaking from experience! Nobody gave me anything on a silver platter. I had to work twice [as hard] to get to where I am now!
“Even to become world champion and get a title shot, I had to fight [for the opportunity]!”
