Pierce O’Leary set to face Liam Dillon for vacant European title

Pierce O'Leary

FORMER British champion Liam Dillon has emerged as a likely opponent for super-lightweight operator Pierce O’Leary, who looks to claim the vacant European title on June 7.

While their showdown is yet to be announced, the EBU has confirmed on its website that the pair will lock horns on the undercard of Fabio Wardley vs Justis Huni.

Oโ€™Leary, 16-0 (11 KOs), was already scheduled to fight on the Queensberry Promotions bill at Portman Road โ€“ home of Ipswich Town Football Club โ€“ against a mystery opponent.

But now, it would appear that Dillon, 15-2-1 (3 KOs), who was campaigning at super-featherweight in the not too distant past, is gearing up to test his skills at 140lbs.

The 29-year-old claimed his Lonsdale Belt in 2023 down at 130lbs, before suffering a unanimous decision defeat to Reece Bellotti in his following outing.

Dillon nonetheless gave a gallant account of himself, though, and despite losing a wide decision to Ryan Garner, too, he remains a sturdy combatant in the lower divisions.

In his last assignment, the Londoner outlasted Mace Ruegg in an absorbing lightweight contest, edging a split decision in a fight where, for the most part, he looked to be in control.

Oโ€™Leary, meanwhile, has established himself as a fully-fledged super-lightweight, his muscular frame suggesting that he has the capacity to fly through the divisions.

Notable victories over Darragh Foley and Kane Gardner have also seen the Irishman showcase his strong fundamentals and seemingly efficient gas tank.

But against Dillon, it could be said that the 25-year-old is likely to enter the sternest test of his professional career thus far.
