What’s your prediction for Moruti Mthalane vs Sunny Edwards?

What’s your prediction for Moruti Mthalane vs Sunny Edwards?

Michael Conlan
Rising athlete

I think either Sunny puts on an absolute boxing masterclass and is too young or Mthalane lands clean and causes a lot of problems for Sunny. The guy’s beat Casimero, he beat Tete, he hasn’t been defeated in a long time. But I think Sunny’s style is all wrong for most opponents. I think Sunny can pull off the upset.

Joe Gallagher
Leading trainer

Edwards has got it all to do. Mthalane can whack. Anyone who can knock Tete out can whack. He’s lost to Donaire. So for Edwards, his record suggests it’s a huge leap up for him. I think Mthalane will have seen everything in his career beforehand. He may be getting on with age but he still has his power.

Alex Steedman
Broadcaster

Edwards has the skills to do this and the timing is right. But can he avoid getting clipped at this level for 12 rounds? I hope so but fear Mthalane might be too strong.

Declan Taylor
Sports reporter

Mthalane is probably the most overlooked world champion in the sport, is vastly experienced and can punch – but his career is now into its third decade so he’s no spring chicken. Sunny Edwards is talented, slick and fearless but I feel Mthalane will know a bit too much for him and win a decision.

Lisa Whiteside
Commonwealth Games gold medallist

I hope Sunny wins. He has matured well in boxing and has all the skills necessary to cause the champion big problems. Mthalane hasn’t lost since 2008 and that was against the great Nonito Donaire. The South African champion has a high stoppage percentage but at 38 and having not boxed in well over a year, Sunny’s slick style could be a huge problem. Sunny on points and another British world champ.

Stacey Copeland
Former champion

A tough test for Sunny as Mthalane comes with a lot of experience and is very solid all round. But Sunny is full of confidence and his style makes him a tricky opponent. He has the advantage in age obviously, plus Mthalane has been inactive for over a year so you never know how that might impact a fighter.
