5. Retire

It was a chilling knockout. No fan of Amir Khan can have wanted to see him fall that way. It is unlikely that he will retire, he is only 29 years old and has come back from knockout defeats before. He did well out of this financially but it’s hard to see his fighting heart letting him call it a day. He does need a long break though.

4. Danny Garcia

Khan was the mandatory for the WBC welterweight title that Danny Garcia holds. This bout was under discussion before Amir signed to box Canelo. It would offer Khan the chance to avenge the defeat to Garcia, but after suffering such a crushing knockout it would be risky to go straight into a rematch with someone who’s hurt and halted him before.

3. Manny Pacquiao

Khan spent too long trying to nail down his fight with Floyd Mayweather, though there were also talks with Manny Pacquiao. It should have the ingredients for a thrilling fight, Pacquiao might just be as fast as Khan and given that Manny hasn’t won by knockout in recent years he might have lost his finisher’s instinct.

2. Kell Brook

It’s a major event in the UK, with the now long-running feud between the two. Khan comes in with an impressive track record, he has fought everyone he could but seems in no rush to entertain Brook. For Kell there are few options as appealing as Khan, for Amir that’s not quite the case. It would be sensible though for Khan to take plenty of time to recover from Canelo.

1. Adrien Broner

Khan needs to return to welterweight, he’ll want a big fight, maybe Adrien Broner is the solution. Broner’s antics make him one of the most disliked characters in boxing but they also keep him in the spotlight. He remains a high profile name, many would love to see him defeated again and he doesn’t seem to carry his power up to welter. Perhaps the perfect comeback fight for Amir Khan…
