Top five next opponents for Mikey Garcia

John Dennen considers the most appealing next options for Mikey Garcia

Top five next opponents for Mikey Garcia

1. Terence Crawford

If Mikey Garcia stays at 140lbs, the leading super-lightweight is Terence Crawford. Crawford fights Julius Indongo on August 19 and if he is victorious he will hold all four world titles. That would be the most significant fight for Garcia but could be hard to make, Mikey did have a long running dispute with Crawford’s promoter Top Rank.

2. Jorge Linares

Garcia stepped up from lightweight to take on Broner but he still holds the WBC lightweight world title. If Linares comes through his September 23 clash with Luke Campbell, Garcia could return to 135lbs for a significant unification in the division.

3. Keith Thurman

Even though Garcia has acknowledged he’s not sure he carries his power up to the higher weight divisions, he still believes he has the skills to compete if he bulks up even further. He could head to the glamorous welterweight division. Thurman is the one of the best at 147lbs and would surely be an exciting fight.

4. Manny Pacquiao

Assuming issues with working with Top Rank could be smoothed over, Pacquiao remains a star name. He also is small for welterweight and could presumably meet Garcia at a catchweight. He would present the big-name opponent that Garcia needs.

5. Vasyl Lomachenko

The brilliant Ukrainian is already a two weight world champion and could move up to lightweight, the division where he won his second Olympic gold medal. If Garcia moved back down to 135lbs this would pit two of the most talented fighters in the sport against one another.
