Top 10 heavyweight fights we need to see

Joseph Parker vs Dereck Chisora takes place Saturday, beyond that we consider the top 10 heavyweight fights that must be made

BN Staff

28th April, 2021

Top 10 heavyweight fights we need to see
  1. TYSON FURY vs ANTHONY JOSHUA
The superfight that everyone wants to see. At the time of writing, it sounds like a date and venue for this historic clash are close to being finalised, so it looks like fight fans’ dream contest will soon become reality.
  2. DEONTAY WILDER vs DILLIAN WHYTE
Big-hitting heavyweights with equally big mouths, there is certainly no love lost between Wilder and Whyte. Having gone off the radar since losing to Tyson Fury, this bout would bring Wilder back in a major way.
  3. OLEKSANDR USYK vs JOE JOYCE
Talks are ongoing regarding this fascinating duel between two fighters with very different and distinct styles. The duo previously faced off in the hybrid pro-am World Series of Boxing, with Usyk prevailing.
  4. ANDY RUIZ JNR vs MICHAEL HUNTER
As well as sharing the ring through many rounds of sparring in the pros, Ruiz and Hunter also fought each other competitively as amateurs. It would be interesting to see how this familiarity would translate in a professional matchup.
  5. TONY YOKA vs LUIS ORTIZ
Ortiz may be 42 years old, yet he still poses a threat with his slick skills and heavy hands. Yoka has proved his credentials by winning super-heavyweight gold at the last Olympics, but Ortiz would represent his sternest test so far as a pro.
  6. ALEXANDER POVETKIN vs MURAT GASSIEV
This would be an intriguing all-Russian encounter between a heavyweight veteran in Povetkin and a heavyweight newcomer in Gassiev, who has only recently moved up from the cruiserweight division.
  7. FILIP HRGOVIC vs EFE AJAGBA
Regarded as two of the top prospects in the heavyweight category today, Hrgovic and Ajagba both competed in the super-heavy tournament at the most recent Olympic Games, with Hrgovic claiming a bronze medal.
  8. DANIEL DUBOIS vs MARTIN BAKOLE
Following his defeat to Joe Joyce, Dubois is aiming to recover some of his lost momentum. A victory over Bakole – a fellow UK-based heavy who is in good form – would definitely achieve that, but it would not be easy.
  9. OTTO WALLIN vs FRANK SANCHEZ
Wallin put his name on the heavyweight map by causing Tyson Fury a scare in what was a bloody battle. Sanchez, meanwhile, has his sights set on becoming the first Cuban to win the world heavyweight title as a pro.
  10. ARSLANBEK MAKHMUDOV vs ANDREY FEDOSOV
After upsetting former decorated amateur Mahammadrasul Majidov, Fedosov is now searching for another touted scalp to potentially further enhance his standing. The power-punching Makhmudov fits the bill.
