The young Americans – the 10 best US boxers aged 25 or under
  1. TEOFIMO LOPEZ (23)
Born in Brooklyn but primarily raised in Davie, Florida, Lopez is the current world lightweight champion. In October last year, “The Takeover” scored a stunning upset victory over the revered Vasiliy Lomachenko.
  2. SHAKUR STEVENSON (24)
A native of Newark, New Jersey, Stevenson is currently targeting the big names at super-featherweight. At the Olympic Games in 2016, the sublimely skilled southpaw boxed his way to a silver medal.
  3. DEVIN HANEY (22)
Las Vegas-based lightweight Haney is coming off a career-best win over classy veteran Jorge Linares in May. “The Dream” possesses dazzling skills and seems destined for a bright future in the sport.
  4. VERGIL ORTIZ JNR (23)
Boasting a flawless 100 per cent knockout ratio, big things are expected of Ortiz in the welterweight division. The Grand Prairie, Texas resident tore through the rangy Maurice Hooker last time out in March.
  5. BRANDON FIGUEROA (24)
Another Texan on the list, Weslaco switch-hitter Figueroa is one of the major players at super-bantamweight, having defeated the dangerous Luis Nery in May. In September he is due to take on Stephen Fulton in a fascinating duel.
  6. RYAN GARCIA (22)
A fan favourite with the younger generation on social media, Los Angeles lightweight Garcia proved that there is substance behind the style by vanquishing the accomplished Luke Campbell in January.
  7. DAVID BENAVIDEZ (24)
Phoenix, Arizona’s Benavidez has had some disciplinary issues in the past, but there is no denying that he is a talented operator. He represents a formidable proposition for the current crop of super-middleweights.
  8. ERICKSON LUBIN (25)
Plying his trade in the upper echelons of the super-welterweight category, Lubin is in the midst of a rich vein of form. The Orlando southpaw’s most recent victory came last month against fellow contender Jeison Rosario.
  9. CHRIS COLBERT (24)
Fresh off a win against the tough Tugstsogt Nyambayar this month, Brooklynite Colbert is fast making a name for himself at super-featherweight with his flashy moves and charismatic demeanour.
  10. JARON ENNIS (24)
Emanating from the famous fight city of Philadelphia, “Boots” Ennis is one to look out for in the welterweight ranks. His latest statement of intent was issued in April, when he dispatched the gritty Sergey Lipinets.
