How big is this fight? Anthony Joshua versus Tyson Fury would be huge in British boxing, the unified WBO, IBF and WBA boss against the man who used to hold the titles, and didn’t actually lose them in the ring. However it seems as though we have a long time to wait. Fury has signed a “multi fight” deal with promoter Frank Warren, who works with broadcasters BoxNation and BT Sport. Joshua is a Sky Sports Box Office fighter.
The American is the other heavyweight titlist in the world. He is a loud, brash personality, much like Tyson Fury. The latter surely has the superior skills but could he stand up to the physicality and power of Wilder. If they fought we’d find out.
Whyte is fast becoming a name in a British boxing. After his loss to Anthony Joshua, he has rebuilt and worked his way up the rankings to become the number one contender for Deontay Wilder’s world title. He’s also shown an admirable willingness to fight anyone, Alexander Povetkin and Kubrat Pulev you name it, and no doubt would take on Fury.
4. Tony Bellew
Fury was due to fight David Haye in the increasingly distant past. Tyson should be more sympathetic to pullouts now, having been the architect of few himself. But Haye is rematching Tony Bellew on May 5 and Bellew could well win. Bellew’s team is likely to view Tyson simply as too big a man but if he repeats a victory over Haye Bellew is one the biggest British names in the heavyweight division.
5. David Price
Price has suffered too many knockout defeats in his career, most recently against Alexander Povetkin. The likeable Liverpudlian was dangerous in that fight before he was caught, hurt and badly knocked down. Maybe that has convinced him to box on. If he did fight Fury eventually, a rematch of an amateur contest, it would certainly be a high profile match-up.
