DEONTAY WILDER retained his WBC heavyweight title via highly contentious draw with Tyson Fury.

Tyson Fury looked like the boss for much of the fight, making a mockery of those who felt this contest had come too soon into his comeback. In the early going, he jabbed well, moved his head superbly and make Deontay Wilder – one of the most feared fighters in the sport – look ordinary for long periods.

But it was that punching power that allowed the American to salvage a drawn verdict on the cards. He dropped Fury in the ninth, but by the start of the 12th the challenger was three minutes away from a famous victory.

And then it happened. Wilder landed a cannonball right hand that sent Fury toppling backwards before he swiped in a left hook that appeared to smash the challenger out of consciousness. Flat on his back, motionless bar the blinking of his eyes, Fury looked a beaten man.

Yet he hauled himself upright and, quite incredibly, finished the contest taunting the exhausted champion by putting his hands by his waist and sticking out his tongue.
