Kings of the Capital: The 10 best boxers currently representing London

With Joshua Buatsi and Dan Azeez set to collide in an all-London battle this weekend, we take a look at the 10 best boxers from the nation's capital

1) Anthony Joshua

From Watford, Joshua is a former 2012 Olympic gold medallist and two-time heavyweight champion of the world. He has lost only to Andy Ruiz and Oleksandr Usyk (twice) as a pro and is currently gearing up for another run at a belt.

2) Sunny Edwards

Overlooked in so many ways due to his size and the division in which he competes, IBF flyweight belt-holder Edwards remains one of the most skilled boxers in the UK. Croydon-born and Sheffield-based, he travels to Glendale, Arizona in December to fight Jesse Rodriguez in a fight that should finally put him on the boxing map.

3) Joe Joyce

Despite back-to-back losses against Zhilei Zhang, Joyce, from Putney, has still achieved plenty as both an amateur and pro. An Olympic silver medallist from 2016, he has defeated the likes of Daniel Dubois, Joseph Parker and Carlos Takam.

4) John Ryder

Following a brave but losing effort against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in May, Islington’s Ryder has seen his stock rise on the world stage. A solid southpaw, before fighting Alvarez he had beaten both Zach Parker (injury stoppage) and Daniel Jacobs.

5) Lawrence Okolie

An acquired taste at cruiserweight, Okolie is, on his day, a dangerous and powerful proposition for anyone. The Hackney man has to date won British, Commonwealth and European cruiserweight titles and defended the WBO belt three times before surrendering it to Chris Billam-Smith in May.

6) Joshua Buatsi

Set for his first real test as a pro this weekend against Dan Azeez, Buatsi, an Olympic bronze medallist from 2016, has been moved rather carefully through 17 fights. The Croydon man’s best wins have come against Craig Richards and Ricards Bolotniks.

7) Dan Azeez

To some degree a late bloomer, Lewisham’s Azeez, at 34, has been on quite the run of late, winning 20 pro fights in a row and securing both British and European light-heavyweight titles.

8) Richard Riakporhe

Heavy-handed and explosive, Riakporhe is unbeaten at 16-0 and has won his last four fights by stoppage. In the past 18 months, in fact, the Walworth man has managed to stop Deion Jumah, Fabio Turchi and Krzysztof Glowacki.

9) Ohara Davies

A once divisive character, Davies, from Hackney, has turned around both his career and his popularity in recent years. Currently on a win-streak of seven fights, he could even be fighting for a world title soon.

10) Derek Chisora

Although 39, and although he has won just two of his last six fights, people still love to watch Finchley’s Derek Chisora. What’s more, unlike his rival Dillian Whyte, he has yet to fail a performance-enhancing drug test, and, unlike Daniel Dubois, he boasts wins against heavyweights in the top 30.
