BY some distance, the world heavyweight title is a greater prize than the BBC’s Sports Personality of the Year award, so Tyson Fury should not care, and probably doesn’t, that his nation only voted him fourth in the annual competition. However, missing out on a place in the top three is a little concerning, particularly when one considers what he achieved in 2015. Not since Bob Fitzsimmons beat James J. Corbett in 1897 has a British challenger defeated the undisputed heavyweight king. Fury has just won the world heavyweight title – not a splinter of it, but the real thing. I’m almost certain that had any other British heavyweight handed one of the longest-reigning kings in boxing history his first defeat in 11 years, on his adopted home turf, the BBC, and in turn the public, would have been kinder…
