EDITORIAL: Halt the Tyson Fury negativity

Boxing News Editor Matt Christie takes issue with a section of the UK mainstream press and their reaction to Tyson Fury

EDITORIAL: Halt the Tyson Fury negativity
Esther Lin/SHOWTIME

Boxing News editor, Matt Christie, criticises the reaction to Tyson Fury from a section of the UK mainstream press – in this week’s issue.

NOTHING would have made certain writers happier than to have seen Tyson Fury chinned by Wladimir Klitschko on Saturday night. A similar committee of vultures were seen flapping their wings with joy when the same Klitschko and David Haye failed to muster a slugfest four years ago. Most recently they were spotted circling the MGM Grand in Las Vegas where Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao attracted stupendous attention – but largely they’re absent unless a contest is deemed meaty enough to get their spiteful beaks into. In short, if you have a set agenda before the opening bell, you’re probably not the best person to write about it afterwards. Granted, Fury-Klitschko was not a thriller, and Fury must learn to not let every thought that pops into his complicated mind leave via his mouth. But anyone who downplayed what the Englishman achieved in Düsseldorf at the weekend should not write about boxing again.
