EDITOR Matt Christie used his column in this week’s issue to project the future of Gennady Golovkin.
Gennady Golovkin was even more dominant than expected as he expertly thumped the resistance out of a painfully plucky David Lemieux, but the middleweight is merely on the right track. Should the complexities of boxing politics allow him to make the desired strides over the next 18 months, though, we might all be unified in our adoration of a new leader, and a legend. However, that status is still some way off,
and any comparisons to the greatest of all time are, for now at least, fanciful at best.
It would be nice to see the Kazakh clean out his division before moving on, and only the winners of the impending Miguel Cotto-Saul Alvarez and Andy Lee-Billy Joe Saunders showdowns truly remain in his way. After that Golovkin should look no further than the talented, but woefully inactive, Andre Ward. Win those three fights, and we have a fighter the fans will deem far more valuable than Floyd “Money” Mayweather.
