WHATEVER the motive for Chris Eubank telling his son to aim his punches at the body of Nick Blackwell, it’s unlikely the advice is what saved the soon-to-be beaten fighter’s life on Saturday night. What can be attributed to Eubank, though, is the system of care that did come to Blackwell’s rescue: the paramedics and the immediate assistance they provided when the fighter collapsed after a heroic but futile effort to outlast his nemesis. As we know only too well, Eubank’s 1991 opponent, Michael Watson, did not get such speedy treatment. Since that event, boxing, at least in this country, has been markedly better at preventing disaster.
