10 of the best trilogies involving two British boxers

10 of the best trilogies involving two British boxers
Alan Minter and Kevin Finnegan

1 Alan Minter and Kevin Finnegan

Minter outpointed Finnegan over 15 rounds for the British middleweight title in 1975, then won the British belt outright when repeating the trick the following year. Their third fight, again for the British title in 1977, was also won by Minter after 15 rounds.

2 Johnny Armour and Francis Ampofo

The final three fights of Ampofo’s professional career were all against his bantamweight rival Armour, the first taking place in 2000 and the last in 2002. Though he lost all three by decision, Ampofo was desperately unlucky not win at least one.

3 Jamie Moore and Michael Jones

Moore beat Jones for the first time in 2003, via decision, but then lost the rematch in 2004 when disqualified for hitting Jones on the break. The third fight, which took place in 2005, was an up-and-down war, won in the end by Moore in six rounds.

4 Danny Williams and Michael Sprott

Heavyweights Williams and Sprott met for the first time in 2002, with Williams winning inside seven rounds. They then met again the following year, Williams this time winning controversially in five. That set up a third fight in 2004, which Williams edged – just – on points.

5 Colin Powers and Clinton McKenzie

Powers stopped McKenzie inside two rounds in 1977, and then, once McKenzie was a bit a more seasoned, beat him via 15-round decision for the British super-lightweight title in 1979. McKenzie finally had his moment later that year, though, when outpointing Powers in a thriller to win the title.

6 Freddie Mills and Arthur Sadd

Long before winning the world light-heavyweight title, Mills split three fights with Arthur “Ginger” Sadd, losing the first encounter on points in 1939 only to then come back and outpoint Sadd in 1940 and also stop him in nine rounds the following year.

7 Matt Skelton and Michael Sprott

Skelton and Sprott fought three times, including a three-rounder in the final of the 2010 Prizefighter tournament (won by Sprott). Their two other fights, one in 2004 and one in 2007, both went the way of Skelton, who won the first by last-round stoppage and the second by majority decision.

8 Robbie Regan and Francis Ampofo

Wales’ Regan fought Ampofo, no stranger to a trilogy, for the first time in 1990, outpointing him over six rounds. The pair then shared two more fights in 1991, both for the British flyweight title, with Ampofo winning fight two via 11th round TKO and Regan winning the third by decision.

9 Julius Francis and Mike Holden

Francis beat Holden on a 10-round decision in 1996, but then lost a rematch against the Mancunian in 2000 with the British heavyweight title at stake. Their rubber match, in 2001, swung back the way of Francis, who took a 12-round decision.

10 Quaise Khamedi and Ijaz Ahmed

A recent inclusion to this list, super-flyweights Khamedi and Ahmed have fought three times so far and drawn two of them. Their last fight, in July, set up a fourth encounter this Friday, but that has since been cancelled.
